The candle market has changed over the years, resulting in a need for master chandlers to continually introduce innovation into their craft. Looking at traditional types, we see how candle makers today have used these as a base for creating product ranges that are a little bit different from the traditional long cylindrical candles we remember our parents lighting when the electricity went out.

Early Candles

It is well known that they have been used for thousands of years but little is known about their origin. It is often written that the first candles were developed by the Ancient Egyptians, who used rushlights or torches made by soaking reeds in melted animal fat. Some writings tell us that the earliest known candles were made from whale fat by the Chinese, during the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC).

Candles were associated with both good and evil, having been used both in religious events in the Church and during the witch-hunts of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance by townspeople who wanted to protect themselves and their livestock. The traditional use was primarily to light the way or perhaps to provide heat or tell the time but much has changed over the years.

Traditional Candle Types<

In the industry, candles have been typically categorised into the following types:

Taper Candles – also known as dinner candles, these are usually 3/4″ to 1″ in diameter and vary in height from 6″ – 18″ tall. Tapers are designed to be held securely upright by a candle holder which will keep them in an upright position for safe burning.

Pillar Candles- these are typically round, solid and self standing candles but may also be square, rectangular, hexagonal, and other shapes. They usually have a diameter of 3 inches or more, and may have one or more wicks. These must be burned on a heat-resistant candle holder.

Gel Candles – produced from gelled mineral oils or gelled, synthetic hydrocarbons, they are transparent, rubbery and are usually poured into various shaped containers. Soft or quasi-rigid gels are poured into a container to maintain the candle’s shape, while hard gel candles have a consistency suitable for free-standing candles and can be made rigid enough to retain and support their own shape. Decorative wax items are frequently suspended within a gel candle to produce a special visual effect.

Floating Candles – these have a low, stable profile and are designed to float on water. They vary in form from simple, smooth designs to elaborate shapes.

Container, Jar or Filled Candles – These candles are poured when manufactured into a glass, metal or ceramic container which is non-flammable and heat resistant, designed to hold the wax and withstand the heat of the burning candle. Containers such as heat resistant glass jars and ceramic pottery are commonly used.

Votive Candles – This is a small candle, cylindrical or square in shape and usually about 1½ inches in diameter and 2 or 2½ inches high. They are designed to be burned in small heat resistant containers such as a “cup” or votive holder to hold the liquefied wax that results from burning. Votives were originally produced as white unscented candles for religious ceremonies but are now available in many colours and scents.

Tealight Candles – these small, cylindrical, filled candles are usually about 1 1/2″ in diameter and around 3/4″ high inside a cylindrical metal container. They are used in food warmers or as candles in a tealight holder.

Luminaria Candles – these are for use outdoors and are made by placing a 15-hour votive in a light-diffusing container filled with sand.

Specialty Candles – also known as novelty candles, these come in any three dimensional shape imaginable. They can be moulded or sculpted by hand and are mostly for decorative use.
